Message from the president

Welcome to the website for the South Shore Genealogical Society. The SSGS, founded in 1979, is a volunteer-driven organization made possible by a dedicated group of researchers, historians and others who want to keep alive the stories of the families in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Lunenburg was founded in June of 1753 when almost 1500 European settlers from Germany, Switzerland, and France left their homeland behind to start anew in the newly-formed British colonies of Nova Scotia. These settlers, known historically as the “Foreign Protestants”, created an outstanding culture which is still celebrated by their descendants today. Please enjoy this website, browse our various online records, and hopefully you can visit our research offices at the historic Lunenburg Academy, and discover more about the history of this town, it’s people, and our families.

Welcome to Our New Website and Our New Home

Genealogists love to share the fruits of their research labour…..and sharing this new website is no different.  We are so pleased to be able to share this brand new website and its fascinating contents with you.

In fact, the South Shore Genealogical Society has been sharing family history and genealogy information with members and the public for over thirty-five years. We are truly glad to be able to continue to do so.

If you are a member of the public who has just found this site, “Hello, how are you doing?” Welcome to our site. We’d like to show you some information about the families who have settled in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia since…forever.

Take a wee run through and search the different areas of interest to you. Get comfortable with this site which will be changing and developing as a highly useful way of gaining the data you seek. Bear with us because the site is new and may have some early bugs to be worked out. We shall do our best to make this a functioning and helpful place to visit. Please send along any feedback you have so we may improve what we are doing.

You will be able to see what events are coming up and some of the material we have to offer both on this website and in our physical holdings at our Lunenburg, Nova Scotia research centre.

The Centre is in our NEW HOME, the famed Lunenburg Academy. Holdings are accessible by our members. Needless to say, we hope you will become a member and continue the journey with others deeply interested in genealogy.

If you are an SSGS member you already know the benefits of membership. We hope you will enjoy the features of this website and use it to its full capacity.  If you have ideas for events, new features, research ideas, or anything you want to contact us about – we hope you’ll do so.

Thank you for coming to this website, looking it over, and interacting with the South Shore Genealogical Society. Please join us for an event and/or come to our Lunenburg Academy home.  We are pleased to have you visit us in both places!

Do you recognize any of these photos?

We receive many photographs where we cannot identify the people or places.
