As a Society volunteer, you can be part of the team that works to collect and share the rich history of Lunenburg County.

If genealogy interests you, come to our Research Centre this coming Wednesday to learn more about the Genealogical Society, its valuable resources and opportunities to volunteer!

Message from the President

Welcome to the South Shore Genealogical Society website. The SSGS, founded in 1979, is a volunteer-driven organization made possible by a dedicated group of researchers, historians, and others who want to keep alive the stories of the families in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia.

Lunenburg was founded in June of 1753 when almost 1500 European settlers from Germany, Switzerland, and France left their homeland behind to start anew in the newly-formed British colonies of Nova Scotia. These settlers, known historically as the “Foreign Protestants”, created an outstanding culture which is still celebrated by their descendants today. Please enjoy this website, browse our various online records, and hopefully, you can visit our research offices at the historic Lunenburg Academy to discover more about the history of this town, its people, and our families.

Faune Creaser
President
